Septic Pumping Q&A with Sean:

Q. How often should have my tank pumped?

A. Pumping is determinate with usage and how much water enters the system. Typically every two to five years for the average family. However, the health department recommends it be done every two years.

Q. What about additives?

A. Bacterial enzymes and enhancers are generally not recommended by us, as we have not seen evidence that they help. Some, such as those that foam up solids, can even do damage to the septic field over the long term. As a rule they are not needed.

We do recommend the use of tree root killer if you have trees within 100 feet of your septic tank or field. We have seen good results from it’s use and is available at most hardware stores. Look for "Robic K-77" and "Copper Sulfate." Customers in Will County can find it at Crete Ace Hardware.

Q. How does the septic system work?

A. The sewer line exits from your home and enters the septic tank. Solid and liquid waste are held in the tank where bacteria decomposes solids, paper, etc... Only fluid is supposed to leave the tank. The liquid waste which leaves the tank is distributed in the septic field where it soaks into the soil, in the case of sand, or evaporation takes place with the denser soils, such as clay.

During rainy weather, some systems may form a wet spot in the yard where effluent is leaching to the surface. This is a sign of over-saturation. Pumping the tank may help, but additional measures may need to be taken. Regular pumping generally will keep the problem to a minimum.
